This is a placeholder for a discussion of keeping one's Yahoo! account secure, from the point of view of a Yahoo Groups member. Its purpose is to provide a place for Group moderators to formulate advice to their members. Once it has at least a modicum of decent content it can also be a reference that moderators can cite in their own groups.

 

I'm not really intending this to delve into aspects of safe use of Yahoo! mail, that ought to go into YahooMailpedia, were there such a place.

 

Ideally this would combine simple explanations with references to Yahoo Help and other primary sources for more detailed information.

In 2012 and 2013 I noticed on a regular basis that periodic emails would arrive from members' Yahoo email accounts with a hacker URL. From what I have heard, groups have been hacking Yahoo email passwords. Then they login as the Yahoo member and send an email under the Yahoo member's email with an URL to a website where victim visitors can be attacked in some way.

I always remind my group that, if you receive a message:
1) if there's no subect - the email is suspect
2) if there's ONLY an URL and no personal text, the url is dangerous
3) if there's only CANNED text that doesn't sound like your friend, the url is dangerous
4) if you don't know the sender, the url is dangerous

I also tell them, if your email has been hijacked:
1) change your password immediately.
2) make the new password longer than 8 characters
3) have both letters and numbers in the password PLUS a character such as @ or # or & IF your email service allows that.

It has been proven that it take longer to crack your password if it's longer than 8 characters long. Oddball characters also make it take longer to crack.
SO... your best account security is to have longer passwords with oddball characters in it, AND do NOT use the same password for everything.
And don't open files or go to url's from emails that don't have personalized messages from good friends.
